Neisseria meningitidis elaborate filamentous adhesins, pili or fimbriae, which belong to the type-4 structural group of pili also found on other bacterial pathogens such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Moraxella bovis and Dichelobacter nodosus.
