MITF (microphthalmia-associated transcription factor) encodes a transcription factor with a basic-helix-loop-helix-leucine zipper (bHLH-Zip) motif. Ectopic expression of MITF is found to convert NIH/3T3 fibroblasts into cells with characteristics of melanocytes.
