Pathogenic bacteria acquire resistance to chemotherapeutic agents by mutational events in the intrinsic genes or by incorporating foreign resistance genes. The resistance genes to various drugs were transferred among bacteria by transformation with free DNA, phage-mediated transduction, or cell to cell conjugation.
