In recent years, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato has been subdivided into three species, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, Borrelia garinii, and Borrelia afzelii, and a new species restricted to Japan, Borrelia japonica, has been isolated from Ixodes ovatus.
