We present characterisation of a hypervariable locus, D8S210, mapped to the telomeric region of the short arm of chromosome 8. The locus is highly polymorphic with alleles varying in size from 1.8 kb to 24 kb. Sequence data from 7 alleles shows that the variable region is entirely polypurine on one strand with a tetranucleotide repeating unit GGAA at the margins and diverged versions of this motif internally.
