A mutant of Escherichia coli, JCB606, shown to be pleiotropically deficient in the formation of endogenous membrane and periplasmic c-type cytochromes, synthesised the apo form of the exogenous cytochrome c550 from Paracoccus denitrificans, but not the holo form.
