The perfringolysin O (theta-toxin) gene (pfoA) of Clostridium perfringens was cloned into an Escherichia coli-C. perfringens shuttle vector, and the pfoA gene was expressed in mutants of C. perfringens 13 which lacked the production of perfringolysin O.
