We propose that the molecular heterogeneity of estrogen receptors (ER) in breast tumor cells characterized by the presence of mutant receptor forms, generates the cellular heterogeneity evident when progesterone receptor (PR) or DNA ploidy are analyzed in cell subpopulations.
