Bacterial degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons initially proceeds through monooxygenase or dioxygenase attack on the aromatic ring. The dihydroxylated compounds formed are substrates for ring cleavage and further catabolism to tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates.
