The Escherichia coli pgsA3 mutation, which causes acidic-phospholipid deficiency, was found to repress the flagellar master operon, as assessed by the beta-galactosidase activities of flhD-lacZ fusions. This explained the impairment of flagellar formation and motility by the mutation.
