The carotenoid biosynthesis genes form a cluster within the genome of Rhodobacter sphaeroides, lying in the middle of a larger cluster and 45 kb in length, which contains genes for bacteriochlorophyll biosynthesis and for the reaction center and light-harvesting apoproteins.
