BACKGROUND: ATP13A2 is a monogenic causative gene of Parkinson's disease, whose biallelic mutations can result in Kufor-Rakeb syndrome. Biallelic mutations in ATP13A2 have also been reported in pure or complicated hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP).
