BACKGROUND: Haptoglobin (HP), a plasma glycoprotein, binds to free hemoglobin and prevents the loss of iron and kidney damage. The variations of HP gene affect its enzyme activity, resulting in varied antioxidant, angiogenic and anti-inflammatory properties.
