Type 1 ryanodine receptor (RyR1) plays a key role in Ca2+ release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) during excitation-contraction coupling of skeletal muscle. Mutations in RyR1 hyperactivate the channel to cause malignant hyperthermia (MH).
