The spore-forming bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) of the Bacillus cereus group uses toxin-opened breaches at the insect midgut epithelium to infest the hemolymph, where it can rapidly propagate despite antimicrobial host defenses and induce host death by acute septicemia.
