The ultrastructural imaging of melanocytes coupled with analyses to detect sulfur-containing melanosomes by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to test the hypothesis that the yellowish-red and black pigments found in Arabian horses result from pheomelanogenesis and eumelanogenesis, respectively.
