Maintenance and replication of the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) is essential to mitochondrial function and eukaryotic energy production through the electron transport chain. mtDNA is replicated by a core set of proteins: Pol γ, Twinkle, and the single-stranded DNA binding protein.
