Human telomeres and adjacent subtelomeres are packaged as heterochromatin. Subtelomeric DNA undergoes methylation during development by DNA methyltransferase 3B (DNMT3B), including the CpG-rich promoters of the long non-coding RNA (TERRA) embedded in these regions.
