Available data do not support the concept that leukocytes engulf and kill bacteria in the bloodstream. Leukocytes cannot recognize or engulf bacteria in flowing blood; therefore, phagocytosis is impossible in the bloodstream and occurs instead outside of the bloodstream in the body tissues.
