BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like symptoms (MELAS) and MIDD (maternally-inherited diabetes mellitus and deafness) are caused by A3243G transfer RNA mutations that affect mitochondrial function.
