Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), the most common cause of acute renal failure in childhood, is mainly caused by infection with Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC). Besides its cytotoxic activity, Stx has been shown to interact with the complement system.
