Diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) is based on cytopenia(s), bone marrow morphology, and cytogenetics. Cytogenetics is helpful both to assess clonality and to identify typical aberrations. Chromosomal rearrangements are usually investigated through the karyotype after chromosome banding.
