In higher eukaryotes three different types of creatine kinases (CK) are expressed: the muscle-specific M-CK, the ubiquitous cytoplasmic B-CKs, and the mitochondrial Mi-CKs. They fulfill multiple tasks in cells with an intensive energy metabolism.
