Canavan disease (CD) is a fatal neurological disorder caused by defects in the gene that encodes for a critical metabolic enzyme. The enzyme aspartoacylase catalyzes the deacetylation of N-acetylaspartate to produce acetate required for fatty acid biosynthesis in the brain.
