Commensal Escherichia coli from healthy adult humans were screened for antibiotic resistance genes. Two unrelated strains contained the sul2 sulphonamide resistance gene and strAB streptomyicn resistance genes with the dfrA14 trimethoprim resistance gene cassette in the strA gene and conferred resistance to trimethoprim and sulphamethoxazole.
