Although the rate at which mutations in the tyrosine-methionine-aspartate-aspartate (YMDD) motif of hepatitis B virus polymerase form is high during prolonged lamivudine (LAM) therapy, these mutations sometimes occur naturally in treatment-naïve patients with chronic hepatitis B.
