The genetic locus glt, encoding glutamate synthase from Rhizobium meliloti 1021, was selected from a pLAFR1 clone bank by complementation of the R. meliloti 41 Glt- mutant AK330. A fragment of cloned DNA complementing this mutant also served to complement the Escherichia coli glt null mutant PA340.
