BACKGROUND: Sodium-lithium countertransport (SLC) is a premorbidity marker of essential hypertension. Evidence from linkage analysis and kinetic studies in humans have suggested that SLC20A1 variations may affect SLC activity as measured in erythrocytes and leukocytes.
