Analbuminemic rats (NAR) are a mutant strain in which splicing of the albumin mRNA is blocked due to a seven-base-pair deletion in an intron of the albumin gene. NAR liver contains a few hepatocytes that react with anti-rat albumin antibody (Alb+ hepatocytes), and these cells increase in number during aging and on treatment with hepatocarcinogens.
