Spinocerebellar ataxia type 5 (SCA5) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by mutations in beta-III spectrin. A mouse lacking full-length beta-III spectrin has a phenotype closely mirroring symptoms of SCA5 patients.
