Nephrocystin mutations account for the vast majority of juvenile nephronophthisis, the most common inherited cause of renal failure in children. Nephrocystin has been localized to the ciliary transition zone of epithelial cells or its analogous structure, connecting cilium of retinal photoreceptors.
