An experimental system was used in which His+ mutations induced by ultraviolet light (UV) arise from non-photo-reversible photoproducts whereas lethality is largely determined by photoreversible photoproducts. By exposing a strain with a deletion through recA to light immediately after UV, it was possible to examine mutagenesis under conditions where survival was not significantly different from 100%.
