The neuronal protein alpha-synuclein has been linked to the pathogenesis of synucleinopathies, a collection of neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's disease. alpha-Synuclein belongs to a family of synuclein genes that includes beta- and gamma-synuclein.
