The Rhizobium meliloti NifA protein is an oxygen-sensitive transcriptional regulator of nitrogen fixation genes. Regulation of NifA activity by oxygen occurs at the transcriptional level through fixLJ and at the posttranslational level through the sensitivity of NifA to oxygen.
