Unchecked accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) compromises maintenance of hematopoietic stem cells. Regulation of ROS by the tumor suppressor protein ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) is critical for preserving the hematopoietic stem cell pool.
