Following severe traumatic or thermal injury to the dermis, hypertrophic scars (HTSs) often develop in humans. These scar fibroblasts (hypertrophic scar fibroblasts (HTSFs)) retain the myofibroblast phenotype persistently, rather than transiently as in acute wounds.
