A novel sulfate-reducing bacterium (strain JS1T) was isolated from lake Pangong, a salt-water lake situated in the Himalayas of Leh District, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Cells of strain JS1T are Gram-negative, vibriod, motile by means of single polar flagellum, contain desulfoviridin, are catalase-positive and can hydrolyse starch.
