Sialylation (e.g. expression of sialic acid) plays a crucial role for function and stability of most glycoproteins. The key enzyme for the biosynthesis of sialic acid is the UDP-N-acetylglucosamine 2-epimerase/N-acetylmannosamine-kinase (GNE).
