Comparative studies of monotreme proteins are of particular value in gaining an understanding of the origin of mammals and their interrelationships. The presence of two lysozyme variants, echidna lysozyme I and II, has been confirmed in mature milk samples of Tachyglossus aculeatus multiaculeatus and Tachyglossus aculeatus aculeatus respectively.
