Epidemiological evidence suggests a direct relationship between alcohol consumption and the prevalence of cirrhosis. However, the observation that only 8-30% of alcoholics develop cirrhosis illustrates that individual susceptibility mediates the relationship between alcohol consumption and cirrhosis.
