Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) is caused by homozygosity for FXN alleles containing an expanded GAA triplet-repeat (GAA-TR) sequence. Patients have progressive neurodegeneration of the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and in later stages the cerebellum may be involved.
