The apolipoprotein E genetic polymorphism exerts a well described influence on Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk, although the pathogenetic mechanism is still not clear. Increasing evidence points to a diminished neuroplasticity in apolipoprotein E varepsilon4-allele carriers.
