About 10 % of breast cancers are "hereditary", i. e. caused by a pathogenic mutation in one of the "breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility genes" (BRCA). The BRCA genes 1 and 2 identified to date follow an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern.
