BACKGROUND: Progressive external ophthalmoplegia (PEO) is a mitochondrial disorder associated with defective enzymatic activities of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), depletion of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and/or accumulation of mtDNA mutations and deletions.
