The molecular evaluation of the chlamydial major outer membrane protein (MOMP) gene (omp1) can facilitate epidemiologic investigations of this pathogen. Genotyping of omp1 provides a more precise characterization of Chlamydia trachomatis than do current immunotyping techniques.
