PURPOSE: Matrix metalloproteinases play a crucial role in the cancer invasion and metastasis, angiogenesis and tumorigenicity. A single guanine insertion--the 1G/2G polymorphism in the promoter of the matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1) gene creates a binding site for the transcription factor AP-1 and thus may affect the transcription level of MMP-1.
