A respiration-deficient (RD) mutant was isolated from the petite-negative, salt-tolerant yeast Zygosaccharomyces rouxii. One strain among sixteen glycerol-non-utilizing mutants exhibited vigorous liberation of CO2 but no uptake of O2.
