The basic functional unit of the large-conductance, voltage- and Ca2+-activated K+ (MaxiK, BK, BKCa) channel is a tetramer of the pore-forming alpha-subunit (MaxiKalpha) encoded by a single gene, Slo, holding multiple alternative exons.
