Thymidine analog mutations (TAMs) in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) reverse transcriptase (RT) confer resistance to zidovudine (AZT) by increasing the rate of ATP-dependent phosphorolysis of the terminal nucleotide monophosphate (primer unblocking).
