Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) of the macrocyclic senecionine type are secondary metabolites characteristic for most species of the genus Senecio (Asteraceae). These PAs are deterrent and toxic to most vertebrates and insects and provide plants with a chemical defense against herbivores.
